Al Dente, Leafs Lose Game 7

Griff Bordignon May 5, 2024

I wanted to sleep before writing this as my emotions were high last night plus like Kurtis from Alberta, the Molsons were flowing at my local Chucks Roadhouse.

It’s time to swallow a tough pill. The Leafs lost game 7 2-1 to the Bruins and once again lose in the first round 4-3.

This game started weirdly as when warm-ups started, Joseph Woll wasn’t out for warm-ups and it was announced that he hurt himself trying to save his shutout in game 6. Meanwhile, Auston Matthews returned for the critical game 7. Giving Ilya Samsonov to start the game, which had Leafs fans very worried.

The first two periods were a back-and-forth. dogfight as Jeremy Swayman and Ilya Samsonov were making big saves for both. teamsgiving the teams and fans hope that they can win this game.

Through 40 minutes we are scoreless setting up for a stressful third period.

However, stress levels eased at the 9:01 mark of the third period as game 6 hero, William Nylander broke through and got one past Jeremy Swayman to give the Leafs a 1-0 lead.

That lead lasted all of 1:21 as when the Bruins went down, they came clawing back and Hampus Lindholm tied up the game 1-1, because nothing comes easy.

The thing that bothered me after the tying goal was that Leafs didn’t get that killer instinct and were playing for OT instead of saving there fans the rising blood pressure and preparing for the worst/hoping for the best.

What is game 7 without overtime? I don’t know and I don’t like it.

Overtime lasted all of 1:54 because when you’re coach calls you out for poor play, you answer when the team needs an answer and that is exactly what David Pasternak did for Boston, well that and the fact, Mitch Marner and Morgan Reilly said pass go collect $200 and go the the second round. Bruins win the game in overtime 2-1. Thus eliminating the Leafs sending them to there tee times.

I love Bonsie and Ralph’s calls and here is there call of the overtime loss.

You can’t put this disappointing loss on Samsonov, he gave you chance after chance to win this game, this came down to the face that 1/4 of the “core 4” decided to show up when the lights shined the brightest. Here is a stat that will make Leafs haters smile and fans cry.

Now, as for a true post mortem, I will wait a few days or when a bunch of people get fired which needs to happen, you can’t run it back.

As for me, well CFL football is around the corner, but first. I know I don’t write about the Leafs all the time, but I enjoy writing post game playoff pieces and it sucks when it ends. So thank you for reading and here’s to hopefully change coming as this team is where the 2017-2018 Toronto Raptors were. Wake up MLSE it’s time to change things up.
