Are The Maple Leafs Better Off Without Auston Matthews, Leafs Win Game 5

Griff Bordignon Apr 30, 2024

Well, now that I have your attention, The Maple Leafs win and live to see another day, I said this game was going to be lopsided either way and it was the opposite as we had a quiet 2-1 win for the Blue and White in overtime none the less.

The first period is where most of the action begins, and in the playoffs, you need guys who normally don’t score to step up and score a goal. In Toronto’s case that is exactly what happened as Jake McCabe got an open shot from the point and clapped one home past the Bruins netminder Jeremy Swayman and the Leafs go up 1-0.

About eight minutes later, Boston got a chance and like they have done for five games now, they capitalized when you give them an inch. Trent Frederic got an open shot right in front of Joseph Woll and we’re tied.

The biggest stories of this game was both the play of goalies Jeremy Swayman and Joseph Woll who both stood on their heads all night make save after save, giving the fans on both sides of the puck heart palpitations throughout the night.

The second and third periods were a mix of chance after chance by both sides and Bruins rat Brad Marchand with the flop of the century, which drew a negative reaction from the TD Garden faithful. However after 60 we are tied and hold on folks, we’ve got overtime.

The overtime frame here only lasted 2:26. After a miraculous save by Joseph Woll, John Tavares had a shot that went just off Swayman and Matthews Knies was in front and well, I will let Joe Bowen take it from here.

That’s right Matthew Knies pots home the game-winning overtime goal of game 5 and we’re going back to Toronto, baby. This game was a mix of a complete team effort and a goalie change where Joseph Woll was unbelievable for more than sixty minutes of hockey. Without him, I think this piece of a tear-them-to-shreds eulogy.

Now Thursday, let’s see what happens. Boston was in this spot last year and Toronto was on the receiving end of this three seasons go to Montreal. You’re playing with house money Toronto, let’s see what happens. I will see you all Thursday, win or lose.

Goodnight

If I'm not watching or betting on sports, you can find me on the golf course, between the pipes as your average beer league goaltender. Although sports take up most of my life, I also love spending time with my two dogs, streaming usually a 90's Simpson's or attempting to read more books.
