Argonauts Set For Home-Opener After Rough Start

The Toronto Argonauts are set to open the doors to BMO Field for the first time this season as they welcome their cross divisional foes, the Calgary Stampeders, to their 2025 season home opener.
Both teams are coming off very different Week 1 outcomes. The Argonauts are looking to right the ship after a disappointing loss at the hands of the Montreal Alouettes.
Toronto’s offense sputtered and struggled to gain any real traction last week. Their run game failed to yield any significant yardage, and as such, left too many 2nd-and-long opportunities. Too many possessions turned into punts, and forced their defense back onto the field.
This past off-season saw a huge overhaul to the Argos’ roster on defense. Just as they did a year ago, it might take a few games to be able to read off one another, begin to swarm and pressure the other team’s offense and get the ball back into the hands of their own quarterbacks.
It appears as though Nick Arbuckle will be under center again this Saturday as Chad Kelly remains off both first and second-team reps. Kelly is still recovering from a leg injury suffered in last year’s Eastern Final.
Arbuckle managed to pass for 273 yards and a score last week, but was also intercepted twice and lost a fumble. Damonte Coxie was a bright spot, reeling in 5 catches for 99 yards. Coxie and the rest of the receiving corps will be looking to improve on their stats with Calgary’s almost entirely new defensive team, who gave up 26 points last week – albeit in a victory.
Calgary is coming off of a win against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Vernon Adams Jr. had eerily similar numbers to Arbuckle last week, throwing for 284 yards while also being picked off twice.
Toronto will be looking to apply a similar amount of pressure on Adams Jr., forcing him to hurry passes and turn the ball over. Should the Argos be able to establish a better run game and also improve on their pass game, while limiting time on defense, then there might be a whole lot to cheer about on Saturday night at BMO Field.
