The satisfaction the Houston Astros took in winning Game 3 of the World Series on Friday night had to compete with the fact that their first baseman, Yuli Gurriel, was caught on camera making a racist gesture in reference to Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Yu Darvish, who is from Japan.
Gurriel, who is from Cuba, had just homered off Darvish in the bottom of the second inning to give Houston a 1-0 lead over the Dodgers. As he sat in the dugout, he could be seen smiling and then raising his hands as if to stretch the side of his eyes, clearly referring to Darvish.
The gesture created an uproar on social media as Game 3 progressed, and after it ended in a 5-3 Houston victory, Gurriel, his team and Major League Baseball had to deal with the damage.
Gurriel, 33, apologized and also acknowledged using the Spanish word “Chinito,” which can be a demeaning term for Asians, when he was in the dugout.
“I just feel bad,” Gurriel said through an interpreter. “If anybody got offended over there, it was not my intention.”
Gurriel explained his gesture by saying that he was joking with his teammates about never having success against Japanese pitchers in the major leagues, and wondering if in this instance Darvish had pitched to him differently — as if he, too, were from Japan.
During the five-minute interview, Gurriel seemed surprised at the attention he was receiving over the incident.
Surprised? What a goof.
And this was the postseason of bat flips, instead, Gurriel felt he needed to go racial. It’s 2017 people, this shit shouldn’t be going on still.
He is going to be suspended and rightfully so, he deserves to be for the tasteless act. Let’s hope Kenley Jansen throws one at his head next game, and let’s see if he mocks the big man.
Grow a set and bat-flip next time. Leave people’s race out of it.
