Auston Matthews Is A Record Setting Unicorn

Now that’s how you open your season.

I know what I saw last night.  The start of a journey that may actually end with a Stanley Cup and Auston Matthews is the nexus of that journey.  He’s insane.

Matthews had the game-tying and game-winning goal last night Matthews outscored and outshot the Senators by himself in the second period.  He now is tied with the great Dit Clapper with four straight opening nights with a goal.

(Dit hasn’t played since 1947 when cups weren’t mandatory.)

Matthews only played 19 minutes last night but in those 19 minutes was the de facto best player on the ice.   Other than showing people in Scottsdale his underwear, Matthews worked his ass off this summer with his skills coach trying to figure out a one-timer and different release points.  He put in two-a-days into skills and development which arguable he didn’t have to do but am I ever glad he did.

Ladies and gentlemen, watch this Unicorn and take mental snapshots of this rare beast.  You’ll be telling your Grandchildren about him for years.
