Breaking: Toronto Officially Cancels Summer

It sucks ass but it’s probably smart.

CBC: The City of Toronto has cancelled all major in-person events for a second straight summer due to COVID-19, it confirmed Friday.

Toronto continues to grapple with high levels of COVID-19 during the pandemic’s third wave, though daily case numbers have been declining in recent weeks. The cancellations stretch all the way to Labour Day, even as provincial officials expressed hope yesterday that July and August would be as normal as possible.

Among the cancelled events are the Canadian National Exhibition, Taste of the Danforth, the Caribbean Carnival, Salsa in Toronto and more. You can see the full list released by the city at the bottom of this story — and remember, many of these events will move online in some fashion.

Why make the decision in May, when the future looks so uncertain? The city says in a news release event organizers asked for “as much advance notification as possible” to help with their planning.

All city-related and permitted events have officially been canceled for the second time in two years and the second in 142 years of the CNE.

We’re not going to be at a point where we can talk about mass gatherings and outdoor activities and won’t be until next spring.

Tough summer.

The CNE, Honda Indy, Caribbean Carnival, and Taste of The Danforth are just some of the casualties.

Over the next three weeks, we need to get below 1k daily infections to start opening up and we’re nowhere close to that number.  Also, 70% of us need to get vaxxed before we can even think about concerts or riding a rollercoaster set up by a meth head from Nebraska.

Yell, scream, tweet.  It won’t change anything.  We’re in it and here, so make the best of your backyard.
