Chomsky on climate propagandists: ‘We may have set ourselves back to extinction’

Apr 24, 2023

Noam Chomsky has a message for those of us who care about the health of our planet; get to work, because the only one stopping you is you.

“There has been a corporate campaign for 50 years now to try and prevent concern about the imminent threat of global warming.”

Chomsky was on Blackballed on Earth Day to talk solely about the environment. His first message was to remind us of why a segment of our society still believes global warming is a hoax.

“In the 1970s the leading specialists on global warming…were the fine scientists of the energy corporations,” Chomsky stated. “They were investigating this in great detail, sending messages back to the management saying if we continue to use fossil fuels it’s going to destroy organized life on Earth.”

It’s always depressing when you find out the gatekeepers knew all along about the damage they were doing. This nefarious scheme of shielding the public from global warming data, and then ushering in a campaign to flat out lie about the seriousness of global warming, is a page out of the tobacco company handbook when they lied for decades about not knowing the internal studies that said cigarettes were addictive, and caused cancer.

In fact, the energy companies used the exact same lobbyists to spread the message that global warming was debatable. I’m certain those of you reading this have friends who still echo some of the talking points that arose from this disinformation campaign. You might even be one of them.

This is interview is classic Chomsky. He’s 94 years old, and his age is apparent when he speaks, but if you were to just read the transcript of this interview all you would see is a highly educated person determined to spread a message of hope as it pertains to the planet we live on.
