Don Cherry has been fired from Hockey Night in Canada

An era has come to an end.

Don Cherry has been fired by Rogers/HNIC, putting an end to Coach’s Corner. Or has he? It’s sounding a lot more like, ‘you are going to be fired, so you better quit, right now’.

Dean was all over this and knew exactly how it was going to play out. Send out an apology to distant yourself and then lay down the hammer.

To be honest, I am sad and glad all wrapped into one Rockem’ Sockem’. I grew up with Don, like many of us. It was like Canada stopped around 735 on a Saturday night because Don Cherry was about to comment on any and everything hockey. It was as Canadian as you could get.

And what Don was yelling about, the reason behind his rant, the fact not enough people are wearing Poppies, is correct. There’s no denying that and people need to remember this fascet of the conversation that took place last Saturday. Don’s on to something and hopefully moving forward we all can do a better job wearing a Poppy. But you absolutely cannot attack one group of people to get your point across. He never apologized when given the chance last night when he spoke to reporters and today when he spoke to Sportsnet. Don came in swinging, and he went down swinging.

Long live, Coach’s Corner:

CC: Brian Burke.
