Week 1 is officially in the books, and I’m left with mixed emotions. Don’s Picks went 11-4-1 this past weekend, but my fantasy teams went 2-2, and my Lions took a 48-17 beating on Monday Night Football.
God, I’m sick of being a Lions fan.
It’s painful. I posted that on Facebook after the game, and a friend of mine commented: “it’s one game.” But it’s not. It’s been a lifetime of games like that. I’ve watched the Lions become the first team in NFL history to go 0-16, while forcing two of the 100 greatest players in the history of the game retire early because they were sick of losing. Now we’ve got a Bill Belichick disciple in Matt Patricia, and we still can’t win. I’m convinced no can win in Detroit. We’re cursed.
The Josh Allen era has begun.
I called it, almost perfectly. When the Bills announced that Nathan Peterman would be the starting quarterback, I instantly Tweeted that he would be benched by half-time, and that Allen would be the starting quarterback in Week 2. When you’re right, you’re right. I think Josh Allen is the right choice. He played significantly better than Captain Interception, and should have had his first-career TD pass, had Kelvin Benjamin not dropped it.
Not your same old Chiefs.
The Chiefs have been known as a run-first, play-action type of team over the past view seasons. Alex Smith, whom I still believe is underrated, was widely considered King of the check-down. That team is dead. This off-season the Chiefs shipped Smith out of town, and begun the Patrick Mahomes era. He did not disappoint. Mahomes threw for 256 yards and 4 touchdowns. This is going to be a dangerous team.
Sam Darnold is Jet fuel.
It pains me to talk about, but my god, Sam Darnold was impressive on Monday Night Football. After throwing a pick-six on his very first throw, this mofo showed that he’s got the cojones to comeback from that and complete 16-of-21 passes for 198 yards and 2 touchdowns. He led the Jets to a 48-17 win over my Detroit Lions in their own backyard. They may not be going to the Super Bowl, but they’re going to be a tough team to play this season.

Ravens vs. Bengals
Baltimore looked like the Ravens of old against the Bills in Week 1. Granted it was a Nathan Peterman led Bills, but it was a 47-3 beatdown none-the-less. I’m not sure who the Bengals are anymore, but they still have enough talent to compete with any team in the league. Throw in the fact that these are division rivals, making this a meaningful game, and you’ve got a recipe for a great game.
Vikings vs. Packers
Both teams looked like world beaters in Week 1. Kirk Cousins showed Minnesota fans what a real quarterback looks like. The new Viking threw for 244 yards and 2 touchdowns in a 24-16 win over the 49ers. While Aaron Rodgers pulled out all the heroics against the Bears. The man left the game in the first-quarter with an injury, came back at half-time down 20 points, and won the game. I think this will be a tight game, but I’m not convinced Rodgers will be healthy enough to pull out a win against the Vikes.
Patriots vs Jaguars
I might have been inclined to pick the Jaguars had their cornerback Jalen Ramsey not ran his mouth during the off-season. The young corner was trash-talking the Patriots and tight-end Rob Gronkowski, saying that he isn’t as great as people make him out to be. You never want to give the Patriots more reason to want to beat you. It’s just not smart. This might be the best game of the week, but I’ve gotta think the Pats are going to bring their best for this game.
