DTTB EP.29 – DARRYL HURS, THE MAN BEHIND INDIE WEEK

This week, I caught up with my “other brother Darryl”. Most of you won’t get that reference, but anyone named Darryl has suffered through people older than us that think they’re hilarious and original with that Newhart reference. Any Darryl out there knows exactly what I’m talking about. This Darryl however, is a key player in the music scene in Canada outside of the major label system.
I first met Darryl in the mid 2000’s when I worked at 102.1 The Edge (with Dean). In more recent years he developed and launched Indie Week, which happens every November in Toronto. I attended last year and got to organize and moderate a panel on the importance of tradition radio in digital age, lol… yet here I am. Anyhow, the conference was an amazing experience and the networking and band discovery was well worth it. Not only is it a great experience for music fans, it’s incredibly worthwhile for musicians as well.
This conference is happening this year and the details are all going to be rolled out in the coming weeks at www.indieweek.com
In fact, there’s some great content and discussions happening on their site. Today there’s one that Darryl is moderating about the future of Music Festivals. These sessions are great for connecting people, sharing ideas and thinking of new/innovative ways to push forward through Covid and the’re FREE
Darryl also works with many international artists and each year Indie Week has a special spotlight on a different country each year. This year the focus is on Brazil. If anyone has caught the band TRAMPA over the past couple of years, Darryl Hurs is 100% the reason why.
He’s also a super nice guy. Get to know DH in EPISODE 29 of DTTB
Darryl Spring
Darryl Spring is a 20-year rock radio veteran with a history at Toronto’s 102.1 The Edge, Hamilton’s Y108 and Kingston’s K-Rock 1057. Most recently he was Program Director, Music Director and Afternoon Drive Host at Ottawa’s Rebel 1017 where he essentially got to create all the programming and curated the stations playlist, primarily from his own music library. His passion for music was clear to anyone that listened to his show. Darryl always made great efforts to elevate independent and emerging artists and built up a reputation as an interviewer. Darryl Spring says, “Artist interviews rarely happen on radio anymore, when they do its brief and offer little depth, and that means music fans are really missing out. The goal of my podcast is to provide people who are passionate about rock with a new and innovative connection to the Canadian Music Industry and the bands and artists they love and support.”
