DTTB Ep. 49 Marcus Visionary – He Breaks Down The History of Rave in Toronto & Jungle / Drum & Bass

Darryl Spring Mar 2, 2021

This weeks podcast has a bit of a different flavour. If you’ve listened to Darryl Talks to Bands, some of the music used is Jungle. Before I got in to radio, I spent a few years Dj’ing in Toronto’s Drum and Bass scene. It’s actually what led me in to Radio. A few years before I worked with Dean at the Edge, I got on a show called Jungle Airwaves at CHIN, on the Global Groove Network in Toronto. We were just going in and mixing records, the odd time we’d crack the mic and say a few words. If there was any influence or inspiration for doing radio at that point, especially in that style, it’s Marcus Visionary.

Toronto was a hub of Jungle/Drum and Bass is the early 90’s, second only to the UK where this music originated. At it’s peak in 94-95 Raves would draw 2000 people or more on Saturday nights in various abandoned warehouses, parking garages, roller rinks or even out of service slaughter houses around the city. Seriously, get on a school bus at Nathan Philips Square and see where you end up.  What a time!

This podcast is basically a history lesson on this music and the early days of the rave scene in Toronto
