Floyd Mayweather wants no part of MMA

There’s a lot of talk whether or not Floyd Mayweather is interested in making a debut in MMA. On Wednesday, Dana White told ESPN, “We’re talking to Floyd about doing a UFC deal.” He then went on to say that the talks were very real and that anything is possible.

In another interview, Floyd Mayweather was quoted as saying, “If I chose to get in the UFC and fight three fights or fight four fights and then fight Conor McGregor, I could make a billion dollars. Which I can. I could do it in three fights or even four fights — I could make a billion dollars. If I choose to get in the Octagon and fight.”

Floyd is now saying that people are “misconstruing’ what he said. And has since been quoted saying, “I said if I wanted to and what I could. Could and would do is different things. I’m not gonna do it, though”. Mayweather also said, “I don’t look forward to getting back in a boxing ring, that’s what I don’t look forward to. I’m just saying I could — I’m not doing it — but I’m saying what I could do to make a billion dollars quick, if I wanted to do that.”

And why would he? Floyd Mayweather is a lot of things. He’s not dumb. He knows that he’s arguably the greatest boxer in boxing history with a heavy emphasis on the arguably. But he knows that he stands no chance in an MMA fight. He has one set of skills. And regardless how great that one set of skills is, he has no skills in any other form of combat sports.

You could literally take an amateur MMA fighter out of any MMA camp and they would beat Floyd Mayweather with their basic set of skills. I’ll take it a step further. Even CM Punk would beat down the 50-0, Floyd “Money” Mayweather. I would also pay to see that. Beating Floyd would be easy. You’d take him down and submit him in less than a round.

Imagine what Conor McGregor would do to him. There would be no coming back from that. Floyd’s 50-0 moniker would be over. Even though it’s a different sport, the last image anyone would have of him would be him getting his face pummelled. MMA is a lot more than striking. You have to defend the takedown, the submission, kicks, elbows, knees, and so on.

So even if Floyd did decide to take on MMA, he’d have to fight Conor McGregor right off the bat. Because there’d be no chance of that fight happening after he’d had his ass kicked by some no name bum. Remember what happened to James Toney? Toney finished his boxing career with a 77-10-3 record, including 47 knockouts. But he thought MMA was a joke, stepped in the octagon with Randy Couture and was submitted in the first round.

Floyd Mayweather wants no part of MMA. And he shouldn’t. If he knows whats best for him and his brand, he’ll stay as far away from it as he can. We’ve already seen how this movie ends. And for a Floyd Mayweather, it doesn’t end well. Continue to pretend like you’re the best fighter in the world. Continue to pretend that Conor McGregor didn’t go ten rounds with you with no prior professional or amateur boxing experience and live your blissfully ignorant life.

And in case you’re wondering what was Conor McGregor’s response to this:
