After months of waiting, Toronto Blue Jays fans around the country can rejoice as George Springer will be playing in his first regular season game with his new team tonight against the Washington Nationals.

Springer, who the Blue Jays signed to a six-year, $150 million deal this offseason, has spent the first several weeks of the season on the injured list. He was sidelined heading into Opening Day due to an oblique strain, and as he was rehabbing that injury another one popped up as a glute strain prolonged his time on the shelf. However, it appears as if both of those ailments are in the past as the 31-year old outfielder is in the lineup at the second game of the Blue Jays’ home-away-from-homestand, batting first and serving as the designated hitter.

I couldn’t be more excited to see Springer rockin’ the New Blues, or any other Jays jersey for that matter, as I’ve looked forward to seeing him in the Toronto lineup where he should make a huge impact. The Blue Jays gave him more money this winter than they have to any other player in franchise history, but frankly, he’s worth the price tag. Springer is unequivocally considered one of the best leadoff hitters in baseball as he’s proved over the last several seasons with the Houston Astros, clubbing 136 career home runs along with a .867 OPS while batting at the top of the order. He stands to be a significant upgrade at the leadoff position over Marcus Semien and Cavan Biggio, allowing them to move down in the lineup which elongates an offense that can be lethal when fully healthy. Once Teoscar Hernandez is ready to return from his COVID-19 the Blue Jays’ batting order will be a force to be reckoned with, alleviating the pitching staff who’s done most of the heavy lifting to get the team to a .500 record through 22 games.

Everyone and their uncle expected Springer to make his much-anticipated Blue Jays debut last night against Max Scherzer and his two different coloured eyes, but fortunately, we weren’t kept waiting much longer. I can’t wait to see Springer serve as the steady anchor at the top of the order that made him so important as a member of the Astros, and opposing pitchers are gonna be punching the air when they have to face him and Vladdy “Hattrick” Guerrero Jr. within the same inning. He’s clutch, he hits bombs, and he’s everything you could want from your leadoff hitter with plus defense — the hype is definitely warranted.
