‘Hella creepy’: Toronto MPPs demand Kevin Vuong resign

Sep 22, 2021
Kevin Vuong, former Liberal candidate and the projected winner of Spadina Fort-York in Canada’s federal election is facing growing calls to resign, including calls from two Toronto MPPs. Dr. Rima Berns-McGowan and Suze Morrison both criticized Vuong’s win, with Dr. Berns-McGowan stating the situation was “hella creepy.”

Kevin Vuong was formerly the Liberal candidate for Spadina Fort-York. According to his public LinkedIn profile he is an “entrepreneur, lecturer, [and] military officer.” Vuong was dropped by his party last minute after local media reported he was previously charged with sexual assault. The charges were ultimately withdrawn, however the charge itself was enough to force the Liberals to cut ties with him. Due to the fact he was dropped from the party at the last minute, Elections Canada didn’t remove his name from the ballot, and people voted for him with the understanding he represented the Liberal Party. Many voters are feeling cheated, and fellow politicians are demanding Vuong step down.

Petition

In response to Vuong’s projected win, Toronto 99 launched a petition demanding Vuong resign. At the time of writing, the petition is just below 2,000 signatures. The petition was picked up by a number of local Toronto news stations, including the CBC, Toronto Sun, CTV, Global, and BlogTO.

Vuong stated he will not resign, and will move ahead as an independent, in a statement posted to Twitter. Vuong denied the sexual assault allegations, and stated “there is work to be done to regain trust, and I fully intend to do so.” It is important to note, Vuong was never convicted, however he is under investigation by the military for failing to disclose his arrest for sexual assault in 2019. Vuong failed to tell the Liberals about this prior conviction.
