CFL Week 2 Picks: Bouncing Back After a Bittersweet Opening Week

Griff Bordignon Jun 12, 2024

Week 1 Recap

In week 1, we performed well, accurately predicting Montreal +7.5, the over in the Elks vs. Riders game, and Toronto’s moneyline win. However, our lock on Hamilton was a significant disappointment. We enter week 2 with a 3-1 record, so let’s get started.

Ottawa vs. Winnipeg

Week 2 begins with Ottawa hosting Winnipeg on Thursday night, a rematch of last year’s Crumback game. This matchup surely has the makings for potential fireworks. However, with key Blue Bombers players like Brady Oliveira and Kenny Lawler out for this game, and Ottawa being a significant question mark going into 2024, I anticipate a low-scoring affair from our nation’s capital on Thursday night. The bet I will be making for this game is Under 47.5 at -115.

Montreal vs. Edmonton

Friday night features Montreal traveling to Edmonton to take on the Elks. Week 1 saw Montreal pick up right where they left off with a 27-12 win over Winnipeg, and Edmonton blew a 21-8 lead against the Roughriders. Edmonton squandered chance after chance to win the game, and receiver Shawn Bane Jr. carved up the Elks’ defense. Once again, Friday night is the lock of the week, and we are fading Alberta again by taking Montreal -4.5 for the game at -112. If you want to make this more exciting, add a Tyson Philpot touchdown at +105 and parlay both bets at +234 for a Fun Friday parlay.

BC Lions vs. Calgary Stampeders

It’s the BC Lions’ Home Opener, and we’re going to party like 50 Cent is performing, with over 50,000 people in attendance for this western clash between BC and Calgary. For this game, we’re going to bet on the BC Lions, who are coming off a bad loss where they were outscored 19-7 in the second half against Toronto. Calgary, meanwhile, beat Hamilton in a surprising effort by both sides. With all that said, I’m taking BC -7.5 at -110. Last year, the same thing happened: the Stampeders got an upset win, and BC lost a bad game, but the following week in Vancouver, BC won 37-9.

Hamilton vs. Saskatchewan

Sunday night ends with Hamilton opening their home schedule against the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Both teams have a lot to prove, as Saskatchewan looks to move to 2-0, and Hamilton is trying to avoid an 0-2 start for the fourth year in a row. Hamilton is under a lot of pressure, as the 1999 Grey Cup championship team will be honored during the game, and Tim Hortons Field will be electric as always. Additionally, with Shawn Bane Jr. balling again against a suspect defense, points will be on the board. To end the weekend, I will be betting the Over of 47.5 at -115.Let’s aim to improve upon last week’s 3-1 record and perform even better. Happy betting!

If I'm not watching or betting on sports, you can find me on the golf course, between the pipes as your average beer league goaltender. Although sports take up most of my life, I also love spending time with my two dogs, streaming usually a 90's Simpson's or attempting to read more books.
