How Deshaun Watson’s Deal is Affecting the Baltimore Ravens’ Standoff with Lamar Jackson

The Baltimore Ravens are facing a contract impasse with their star player, quarterback Lamar Jackson. Executive vice president Ozzie Newsome revealed that owner Steve Bisciotti partly blames the fully guaranteed five-year, $230-million Cleveland Browns contract signed by Deshaun Watson for the issues with Jackson’s negotiations.

“We have to figure out if that’s going to be the norm or is that an outlier. We don’t know,” said Newsome on the “Bernie Kosar Show” on Wednesday.

The Ravens have been negotiating with Jackson for months, but they are reportedly far from reaching a long-term agreement. Jackson denied a report earlier this month that he had turned down a $200 million guaranteed contract, stating that the actual offer was only worth $133 million guaranteed.

Baltimore placed the non-exclusive tag on Jackson, meaning that other teams can sign him to an offer sheet, and if they choose not to match the offer, they will receive two first-round draft picks as compensation.

Jackson has a record of 45-16, passing for 12,209 yards, 101 touchdowns, and 38 interceptions. Apart from these stats, he has also rushed for 4,437 yards and 24 touchdowns, making him a coveted dual-threat quarterback in the NFL.

However, representatives for Jackson have reached out to other teams to initiate negotiations for an offer sheet, but so far, many clubs have shown no interest in the 26-year-old quarterback.

Jackson and the Ravens have until July 17th to agree on a long-term contract.
