There’s a distinct difference between an American and a MAGAmerican.
Americans love their country, family, and freedom. They respect their neighbors and strive to do the right thing. MAGAmericans, on the other hand, prioritize self-interest above all else, embracing a version of freedom that disregards the well-being of others. This ideological divide has left Canada watching from the sidelines, unsure of how to reconcile its deep-rooted admiration for the U.S. with the current political Hellscape designed by First Lady Trump and President Musk.
Canadians Have Always Loved America
Canadians have long been enamored with American culture. We love your beaches, your massive sodas, your sports stadiums, and your undying passion for competition. We LOVE(D) the warmth of Southern hospitality, the creativity of your industries, and the deep historical ties that connect us. Canada and the U.S. have always shared a unique bond—neighbors, allies, and often, family.
That’s what makes this so painful. Watching you give away your rights and freedoms to an Illegal South African immigrant and a 34 time felon/Rapist who loves Russia more than us has been fucking weird.
We thought you were better than that.
We understand that millions of Americans despise Trump and the MAGA ideology. We hear from American friends mortified by what their country has become. But from a Canadian perspective, none of that really matters when so many Americans appear unwilling or unable to do anything about it, including Trump’s obsession over invading Canada while denigrating your best friend as a country that can’t live without America.
Fuck, he’s even planting fake reporters in the oval office to lie about certain “Trump Friendly” provinces America could “pick off,” which is nothing but bullshit.
America Through a Canadian Lens NOW
A recent poll revealed that 70% of Canadians now view America as “the enemy.” That’s a startling statistic. Even more concerning, a similar percentage of Americans see their own country as slipping into dictatorship, comparing it to authoritarian regimes like Russia.
Here are some key statistics from Canadian surveys:
- 90% of Canadians reject the idea of becoming the 51st state.
- 87% would contribute to a war effort against any invasion.
- 60% have canceled U.S. vacations due to political concerns.
- 80% are actively boycotting American products.
Canada is the oldest functional democracy in North America, mainly because a sense of collective responsibility balances our constitutional rights. Our Charter of Rights and Freedoms ensures personal liberties, but always within reason. Rights stop where they infringe upon someone else’s.
The Difference Between Canadian and American Freedom
Canadians value freedom that includes responsibility—not just for ourselves but also for our communities. This is why we recoil at what America is becoming. As we see it, freedom must be balanced with fairness and justice. That means:
- Hate speech laws limit free expression to prevent harm.
- Public health measures, like COVID-19 travel restrictions, are enacted when necessary.
- Religious rights exist but are balanced against broader societal needs.
- Police require warrants, but urgent searches can occur when justified.
Our democracy is safeguarded by institutions that ensure fairness, not ideological whims or populist rhetoric. Watching Trump dismantle democratic norms while Americans stand by, paralyzed by fear or apathy, is disheartening.
The American Experiment is Failing
We don’t expect America to save us from Trump. But we did expect the 300 million who didn’t vote for him to stand up for democracy.
Right now, that’s not happening.
Canadians are, by nature, quiet and deferential. But we understand that democracy requires effort, sacrifice, and sometimes confrontation. We don’t shy away from brutal battles; we embrace them because our freedom depends on them.
The Stoic philosopher Epictetus once said:
“Is freedom anything else than the power of living as we choose? Nothing else. But tell me, do you choose to live in error? No one does. No one free does.”
True freedom isn’t just about personal choice; it’s about making choices that benefit society as a whole. MAGA-style freedom—rooted in selfishness, exclusion, and authoritarianism—isn’t freedom at all. It’s fascism. Canadians – real Canadians – don’t do fascism. We fought fascism when America wouldn’t, and “war crimes” exist because of how hard we fought fascism.
During WWI, Canadian troops earned a reputation for being aggressive, tenacious, and highly effective in trench warfare. German soldiers referred to them as “Stormtroopers,” a term used to describe elite, shock troops that led aggressive assaults. This was mainly due to Canada’s success in battles such as Vimy Ridge (1917), Passchendaele (1917), and the Hundred Days Offensive (1918).
By WWII, the reputation of Canadian forces remained strong, particularly after their fierce fighting in Italy and Normandy. During battles like the Dieppe Raid (1942) and D-Day (1944), Germans noted that Canadian soldiers displayed:
- Extreme tenacity – At Juno Beach, Canadians advanced farther inland on D-Day than ANY Allied forces.
- Tactical ingenuity – Canadians adapted quickly to changing battlefield conditions.
- Stubborn resistance – In battles such as Ortona (1943) and the Scheldt Campaign (1944), German forces remarked on how difficult it was to dislodge Canadian troops once they had secured ground.
- Strong esprit de corps – German troops noted that Canadians fought with intense loyalty and camaraderie, calling Canadian troops “Devils.”
That’s still who we are. And who America never was and still isn’t because Americans fought for themselves, not their country. And it looks like they still don’t.
The Verdict: Canadians Are Moving On
For the first time, Canadians are embarrassed to share a continent with the U.S. Canada has always been the “apartment above the party” regarding our southern neighbor. Now, it feels more like we’re living above a crack den.
Until America removes its “Rapist-in-Chief” from power, many Canadians are prepared to treat the U.S. like any other failing dictatorship:
- With extreme prejudice
- With boycotts
- And with a heavy dose of laughter at the hypocrisy of the freest country in the world, prosecuting political opponents, during media outlets for honest coverage while taking away women’s rights, voters’ rights, while increasing the tax burden for 95% to enrich the 5%.
The special relationship between Canada and the U.S. is on ice. Maybe we’ll talk again when America returns to democracy and gets rid of its felon rapist POTUS, but until then, you’re not like us. And might never have been.
We’re waking up to that now. We love most of you, it’s the MAGATs and the dithering for democracy that we hate.
Like I said, it’s complicated.
