Well how do you like that?

Hummer, defunct since a failed sale to the Chinese in 2009, is coming back, but not like we’ve ever seen it before.

A very gaudily-modified Hummer H2. A bad car made much, much worse.
Please God, not like this.

This time around it’ll be a GMC model, not a standalone brand. Details are scant at the moment but we’ll see more in an ad during the second half of tomorrow’s Superbowl. The full reveal comes on May 20th, 2020, and I’ll be here to relay information as it becomes available.

Until then, this is what we’ve been told:

It’s an EV Pickup Truck

Set to contend with the Tesla Cybertruck, Ford’s electric F150, and whatever Rivian finally decides to start selling. This is a hot emerging market because truck buyers love torque and there ain’t nun’ better for torque than the low-down grunt of electric motors.

Lots of Torque

11,500 lb-ft of the stuff.

For comparison, GMC’s mightiest internal-combustion hauler, the Sierra 3500 Heavy Duty, makes 910 lb-ft and can pull loads weighing 14,500 lbs. Take this stat with a pinch of salt though; all the torque in the world is great but if your tires can’t grip the road you’re not going anywhere. On top of that adding towing weight will shrink the Hummer EV’s travel range.

0-60 in 3 Seconds Flat

Ok, humbugging about traction and range aside, that’s just plain impressive.

It Should be Available in Fall 2022

Again, pinch of salt. You never know with these things, especially when it’s such an ambitious project and they’ve talked a big game about massive performance figures.

It’ll Be Built in Detroit

There’s something deeply right about that, isn’t there? The Motor City moving into the future, and doing so with a big burly pickup truck.

Production will take place at GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant just down the road from HQ. The factory will be dedicated to EV assembly with the brand’s Cruise Origin self-driving taxi to be built there as well.

This should be interesting!
