John Garrett Is Leaving Our TV And I’m Sad

Ryan Hank Mar 24, 2023

There will be a million articles released in the next few hours about the news that dropped prior to the start of the third period of the Canucks/Sharks matchup:

By the time this specific tweet launched it had been viewed 130k times.

John Garrett is in rarified air when it comes to people, let alone broadcasters.  He can make you smile and laugh whether its about the Canucks or not.

He has been on Canucks television broadcasts for 20 years and every single night you feel like you’re in the room with him. Play-by-play announcer for the Canucks, John Shorthouse, has been fortunate enough to be riding shotgun with Cheech for a long, long time and even Shorty was choked up when John broke the news even though he heard about it on Wednesday.

Everyone knows Garrett’s love of ketchup, his disdain for cutlery, and his ability to turn any situation into a story about food. He’s been part of the Canucks organization for longer than most can remember and even had a chance at being MVP of the NHL All-Star Game until some Wayne Gretzky character torched the Wales Conference many moons ago.

Cheech has been generous with his time towards the fans including myself. I was able to do a series on the stories behind the design of Canucks goalie masks and John was kind enough to spend 40 minutes on the phone with me to discuss his bucket or lack thereof.

He’s beloved throughout the hockey community and the broadcast world as well. Here’s a few examples of what was said about him this evening:

His attention to the game should not be discounted as he seems to still have eagle eyes from the sky on replays whether it’s a penalty, offside, goal, no goal; you name it, Garrett has been correct on so many occasions and he will be truly missed by everyone that has seen him on the screen.

It caught us all off guard but he picked the perfect time to announce his departure.

Right you are again, King Friday.

Love you John.
