Leafs Nation – don’t blame Michael Hutchinson, blame Phil Kessel

Shug McSween Nov 30, 2019

While the Maple Leafs continue to struggle with their back up goaltender in net, it dawned on me.

Sure, Michael Hutchinson is a professional goaltender and is capable of making saves, it just doesn’t appear it’s happening at the NHL level anytime soon.

And as everyone screams for Curtis McElhinney to come back and save the day, my mind travels past those hideous waiver wire transactions, and to the trade that sent Phil Kessel to Pittsburgh.

Fack you, Phil, you’re the reason the Leafs can’t have a decent backup, because of the $1.2 million we have paid you the last couple of years and will continue to pay you until 2022. This money hould be being paid to someone still wearing Blue and White, and more specifically, to help find a decent backup.

We can’t put all the blame on Phil, cause who doesn’t love Phil? But, boy does it feel good to point a finger at someone for this backup goalie mess….oh wait, then maybe we should turn our attention to…

Kyle Dubas admitted he made a mistake with his backup goaltender situation when he decided to waive both C-Mac and Calvin Pickard on the same day. He tried to make up for it when he traded Garrett Sparks for a 4th round pick and $5 million in cap space because that cap space was extremely vital to re-sign the core.

Let’s get real though here and call a spade, a spade.

Leafs Nation – if the backup goaltender is the biggest problem, the team is in pretty good shape, no?

The Buds will be fine, their game is back on track, and the team is playing night and day better than when ‘Dinosaur Babs’ was coaching the club.

Now if we could only find someone to make saves when Freddie is wearing a ball cap…
