Lions Roar Past Kansas City in NFL Opener

Sep 8, 2023

Well after 207 days, we finally get our dose of NFL football, something I’ve all been waiting for. Now tonight if you saw my first betting video of the NFL season, you’d know I was heavy on the over for this game and well it didn’t hit as 41 points were scored and the Detroit Lions went into Kansas City and walked away with a 21-20 win in a game that had many flaws to it, but more of that in a bit but let us talk about the game, shall we.

The game got off to a slow start in which both teams combined for 12 plays before being forced to punt, Then it was the Detroit Lions who went to work and capped off a 14 play 8-minute drive with a TD to who else but Amon Ra St. Brown was able to find the endzone on a 9-yard strike from Jared Goff to give the Lions a 7-0 lead.

However you can’t get comfortable and let Patrick Mahomes get space because he decided to take it into his own hands, something Kadarius Toney and Skye Moore didn’t seem to do at all tonight, and found rookie receiver Rashee Rice in the endzone as this game is now all knotted up at 7s.

Detroit proceeded to march downfield and seemed to be poised to regain the lead with I assumed another touchdown, however, Trent McDuffie managed to lodge the ball out of Marvin Jones Jr.’s hands and Kansas City took over. After a couple of drives by both teams which ensued in punts by both sides. The Lions gave Mahomes an inch which gave him a mile because Mahomes turned an 8-play drive into a Blake Bell Touchdown and the Chiefs took a 14-7 lead as we neared the end of the first half.

The first half ended with Detroit managing to get some points but Ben Johnson and Dan Campbell forgot how to coach and nothing happened, we went into the half with the Chiefs up 14-7.

The second half started with a couple of more dud drives as both teams punted but as Patrick Mahomes was trying to make connections with his weapons, Kadarius Toney had a ball go off his hands and into a Branch, that being Brian Branch who in his first NFL game ran that INT back to the house for a pick 6, which for a rookie was awesome to see.

The third quarter didn’t show much else besides a Harrison Butker 35 yard field goal and we go into the 4th quarter with the Chiefs up 17-14.

The 4th quarter got off to another Field Goal by Butker as he drilled a 39 yard Field Goal to give the Chiefs a 20-14 lead.

The Detroit Lions decided to go down the field on a possession that lasted 12 plays and ended with not Detroit’s new toy rookie RB Jahmyr Gibbs running in a Touchdown, no it was instead FA RB David Montgomery running it in from 8 yards out as the Lions go up by 1 point with time running out but surely Patrick Mahomes can win this.

No, The Chiefs couldn’t make the Mahomes magic happen as Moore and Toney had Crisco all over their hands plus weird coaching decisions was the downfall of the Chiefs tonight. Detroit then put the game on ice and got the win and the teams first week 1 win since 2017. Now this was a win where look it is great for Detriot but they didn’t prove it to me that they are this 12-5 division winner, they got past a KC team who oof need Chris Jones AND Travis Kelce out there otherwise the Chiefs season won’t be a smooth ride.

Anyway, we got 271 games to go and I am here to recap every primetime NFL game this season no matter how good or bad. so Crier Media let’s ride.

Hi, my name is Griff and I'm a complete sports nut. I love to play sports, watch sports and most importantly bet on sports too. If I'm not watching or betting on sports, you can find me on the golf course, between the pipes as your average beer league goaltender. Although sports take up most of my life, I also love spending time with my two dogs, streaming usually a 90's Simpson's or attempting to read more books.
