Toronto Blue Jays’ third baseman Matt Chapman seems to be finding his rhythm at the plate his last eight games Although he hasn’t hit any homeruns this spring, showcasing his power hasn’t been an issue for the 29-year-old during his career.

With his free agency coming up next winter, Chapman has plenty of motivation to put together a big 2023 season. Last year Chapman posted a .757 OPS with 27 home runs and 76 RBI, showing he has the potential to be a big asset to any team. 

According to Kaitlyn McGrath of The Athletic, the Toronto Blue Jays player with the most at steak this season is Matt Chapman 

“Chapman is in a contract year, which is a pivotal time for a player to gain or lose a lot. With Manny Machado locked in with the Padres, Chapman will be the best third baseman on the market and a big season could get him paid handsomely. After a springtime trade last year, the third baseman had a good first season in Toronto. He hit 27 home runs and was outstanding defensively (even if he wasn’t rewarded with his fourth Gold Glove). Despite above-average numbers (117 wRC+) the season was a bit uneven with hot stretches wedged between some slumps. This year, Chapman is aiming to cut down on strikeouts and put the ball in play more often. Some changes to the dimensions in the Rogers Centre outfield could benefit a flyball hitter like him as well.”

Matt Chapman found himself fixated on some key numbers from the 2022 season – but they weren’t his typical stats. Instead, Chapman was troubled by his high strikeout count and his tendency to pull the ball over using the whole field. These frustrations inspired him to make required changes in his technique. He has replaced his leg kick with a toe tap, allowing for better control of his forward shift when he swings. Chapman aims to become a more complete hitter with better contact and use of the whole field. With this adjustment, Chapman believes he can once again help lead his team to victory.

Chapman, is feeling more comfortable in his second season with the team after joining in a post-lockout trade last spring. He feels like he has earned the respect of his teammates, which has allowed him to be himself and help lead the team in the right direction. 

At the beginning of the 2022 season, Chapman admits that he didn’t feel like he had the right to speak up about certain things, as he didn’t want to come off as a new guy trying to bark orders. However, the familiarity he now enjoys among his team-mates allows him to talk more freely and guide his team towards success.

Throughout the spring training, the team has been focusing on the finer points of the game, and the players have shown significant maturity. Chapman believes that being professional and understanding what is expected of him as a team player is key to being on a winning baseball team.

Chapman’s growth as a leader is a valuable asset for the Blue Jays as they prepare for the upcoming season. His ability to connect with his teammates and guide them towards success will undoubtedly contribute to the team’s overall performance.
