I don’t have many regrets in my concertgoing life. I passed up a chance to see Prince a little less than a year before his untimely death, a missed opportunity I continue to kick myself over. I probably should have made more of an effort to see The White Stripes’ 2007 anniversary show not far from where my parents grew up in Nova Scotia. Ten years later, that one still smarts. And now I have something new sticking in my craw…
How can I, one of the biggest Simpsons fans there is, miss seeing a group calling themselves The Be Sharps fer cryin’ out loud, playing rock interpretations of songs from the greatest television program of all time?
No, this isn’t a crazy dream brought on by eating one too many Guatemalan insanity peppers. When he’s not reporting on high-profile trials like the Tim Bosma one for CBC, Adam Carter fronts a traditional four-piece band jamming out rowdy singalongs such as “Monorail” and the “We Dooo…” Stonecutters theme that would make cherry axeman Otto Mann proud. Carter and bandmates Andrew Bartle (drums), Andrew Rous (bass) and Arturo Fuenmayor (guitars) were just at Toronto’s Legendary Horseshoe Tavern for a Halloween weekend gig, and have I mentioned yet how ashamed I am I didn’t go?
Fellow Simpsons obsesso @ermahgerd_amber filled me in that The Be Sharps’ super-fun set included “We’re Talkin’ Softball”, Party Posse cover “Drop da Bomb”(AKA YVAN EHT NIOJ), “Happy Birthday Lisa”, “Can I Borrow a Feeling?” and “Dr. Zaius, Dr. Zaius” off the official cast recording of Stop the Planet of the Apes, I Want to Get Off! C’mon Carter, where’s “We’re Sending Our Love Down the Well”, which was the number one hit on Casey Kasem’s countdown before being replaced by “I Do Believe We’re Naked” and plunging all the way down to #97?
Check out some of the Simp-sanity missed by way of the live videos below, listen to The Be Sharps’ hilarious 3-track EP on Bandcamp, and pray to Jeebus, Allah & Buddah that this isn’t the last we’ve seen of them. Even if I’d prefer a name that was more guitar-friendly and inside jokish like Sadgasm or better still, Smiling Politely. Billy Corgan knows what I’m talking about!
