Most of Toronto Wouldn’t Notice if The Argonauts Left The City

Sep 11, 2022

The CFL sucks. Nobody in Toronto cares about the Argonauts. I didn’t want to do this, but you left me no choice.

Regular listeners of Ray’s Sports Rant will hear me make tongue-in-cheek comments about the CFL. My broadcasting style of mixing satire and honest opinion is to keep things entertaining. My disparaging remarks towards the CFL have always been intended to be taken as a joke.

Some Toronto Argonauts fans didn’t get it. A content creator for the BC Lions doesn’t understand satire. Some of them decided to send me DM’s and make it personal. I apologize to all the great CFL fans who get the humour, but I’ve been left with no choice but to destroy the Argos and the CFL.

I wanted to get a feel for how the city feels about the Toronto Argos and its storied history. So I posted this poll.

Bahahahahah!

Nobody gives a shit about the Argos. You can talk to me about all your history, but modern-day fans don’t care.

While doing my research, it showed that Toronto’s average attendance for the Argos is 7,000 people. Comparing that to the Argos landlords TFC who average 25,000 per game, the Argos support is pathetic.

There is a lot of tension between TFC and Argos fans. BMO Field uses natural grass, and the Argos are tearing it up. That’s pissing off Toronto FC fans because BMO field was built for soccer. MLSE took pity on the Argos when they were booted out of Roger Centre and found themselves homeless. BMO is also the home field of Canada Soccer’s men’s and women’s national teams.

Argos fans need to get it out of their heads that Toronto FC and the Argos share a building. The Argos rent a room, and FC is the landlord. You can’t call it an equal partnership when one side brings so much more.

First of all, soccer is bringing the FIFA World Cup in 2026. That’s more important than a league that begged for a government bailout two years ago. You’re delusional if you think FIFA will allow their billion-dollar product on a butchered field because a pick-up football team needs someplace to play.

MLSE needs to protect their more valuable assets. Because the CFL fans insist on pushing the issue, I’ve had to do some research. The Argos are currently valued at CAD 80 million. TFC is valued at USD 650 million. That converts to roughly CAD 848 million.

TFC played almost an entire season in Florida because of Canadian COVID rules, yet they managed to increase their value. The CFL as a whole almost fucking folded because of COVID.

So, you have a league that most people don’t like. You have a team that most people pay no attention to. Yet Argos fans want the team to be in the same conversation as TFC.
