NHL Alum, Darren McCarty Says Cannabis Saved His Life

Cannabis Phil Aug 26, 2019

I think it’s amazing to see how cannabis has changed people’s lives for the better and I applaud people for sharing their experiences.

It’s never easy talking about alcoholism and the personal things that lead to this outcome, but at 47, Darren McCarty has turned a new leaf.

This 1999 incident didn’t stop him from drinking to the point of collapse. So in 2015, several of his friends, including a medical marijuana caregiver who supplied him with weed, isolated him, and for a full week, gave him “gram after gram” of Rick Simpson Oil – a potent marijuana concentrate created by Simpson in 2003 to treat his skin cancer. I was in a coma and when I woke up after seven days, I didn’t have a physical addiction,” McCarty said. “I dropped to my knees and said, ‘Thank God.’

Darren joins a new breed of athletes who are now on the “Green Team” and forward-thinking former and current players like Ricky Williams, the Diaz brothers, Riley Cote, Ross Rebagliati, Mike Tyson, Anthony “Rumble” Johnson, and Cliff Robinson. Forgive me for those I may have missed as the list is a long one. I may have to revisit this one, as a lot of these athletes have a very cool cannabis story behind them.

With cannabis, for some, there is that spirituality or community about it, that brings people to bring it forward. In a lot of ways, it’s part of the education process with cannabis. To expand and further his advocacy on cannabis, Darren has teamed up with Pincanna, a cannabis company currently building a new grow operation in Pinconning, Michigan. Darren is excited to introduce new innovative strains, that will be infused products that have a healing edge to them like CBD products; rubs, salves, topicals, and gummies.

Congrats Darren, looking forward to seeing you in the cannabis space.

It has been amazing to see the cannabis industry grow exponentially over a couple of years, to see this kind of growth is a once in a lifetime opportunity. I first started in the industry as a writer/photographer for High! Canada Magazine, interviewing some top people in the cannabis space. Eventually, I started doing content/video work, social media coverage of various cannabis events across North America, catching the pulse of what was going on and partaking in a quite a few sessions, meeting some truly amazing people on the way. In my previous enslavement (aka "career"), I was involved in the business side of things, so I do have an invested interest in the business aspect. Coming into my somewhat “village elder years”, I hope to bridge the gap between generations, in hopes of breaking the stigma and showing others it's okay to get high, while possibly showing them how. My passion for cannabis and writing covers; strain reviews, vapes, dabs, shatter, social media coverage of events, new products, patient advocacy, innovations and the business of cannabis.
