NHL Fines Maple Leafs/Sheldon Keefe $125k Because Gary Bettman Is As Useful As Balls On A Bike

Is Gary Bettman bored AF?

CBC: The Toronto Maple Leafs have been hit in the pocketbook for travelling over the holidays.

The NHL said Wednesday that the Maple Leafs have been fined $100,000 US for travelling to St. Louis on Boxing Day in preparation for a game Tuesday night.

The collective bargaining agreement between the league and the NHL Players’ Association forbids team activities between Dec. 24-26.

The league also fined Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe $25,000 for “demeaning conduct directed at the officials” during Tuesday’s game.

The NHL’s discipline arm is the boogeyman of punishment. They are never around when you need them and only show up when it doesn’t matter.

Bettman fined the Leafs twice yesterday.

The $100k fine is because the Leaf’s charter jet left at 11:54 PM from Toronto to St Louis for last night’s 5-4 OT win.

The NHL assessed Leaf coach Sheldon Keefe a $25k fine because Wes McCauly missed an egregious high-sticking call on Zach Ashton Reese that should have resulted in a 5 min major.

Nickle and diming is what the NHL does whenever things are running too smoothly. They need to insert their influence every once in a while to remind owners, coaches, and players who the big swinging dick in the cracker factory is.

The collective bargaining agreement says players don’t have to show up for work until the 27th and the Leafs broke that rule by 6 minutes with intention. Keefe lost his mind and undressed the refs in last night’s game.

Fans don’t give a shit about either.

Keefe wasn’t penalized for his in-game rant, and there’s no way leaving for St Louis 6 minutes early is a competitive advantage or a concern for anyone who watched or played in last night’s Blues/Leaf game.

That didn’t stop Gary and Bill from dragging their balls over the faces of MLSE and Sheldon Keefe to the tune of $125K for shits and giggles.

Whatever. The Maple Leafs eat millions in LTIR contracts for cap space fun, so it’s not like Larry is concerned about stroking a useless check for $100K.

The thought counts, and I blame Darryl Sutter for it all.
