I first off want to say I feel terrible for the 2500 people losing their jobs as Nordstrom announced they’re closing all Canadian stores by June 2023. Losing your job sucks, especially when it has nothing to do with your job performance and everything to do with upper management making poor decisions.
The Canadian Nordstrom website has been stripped down to a single page, informing customers of its closure and processes going forward. You can’t even shop online anymore on their Canadian site.
There’s a Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack here in Ottawa, and I have been to both stores. It needs to be known that I am the furthest thing from a fashionista – my usual wardrobe consists of leggings and the same oversized sweater I’ve been wearing for 4 days straight. However, I know when I’m getting robbed.
I feel bad for the employees losing their jobs but in the decade it's been here, I've bought one item off the final clearance rack. I don't think the average person will miss it much.

It sounds like I’m exaggerating, however, I may be UNDERpricing the white t-shirt. I would regularly walk around Nordstrom looking at a $24 t-shirt one minute – turn the corner – and find a similar looking shirt for $399. They do have lots of options for reasonably priced clothing (specifically Nordstrom Rack), but also an aggressive swing to luxury items.
I had to look at their US website to get some prices.
The most expensive plain white t-shirt I could find was this Loro Piana Girocollo Cotton T-Shirt for $475.
If we want to get fancier, this t-shirt from Akris with an embroidered bird is $795.
Another US-based chain bites the dust here in Canada. The company said in a statement: “We entered Canada in 2014 with a plan to build and sustain a long-term business there. Despite our best efforts, we do not see a realistic path to profitability for the Canadian business.”
