People Don’t Hate The World Baseball Classic, They Just Don’t Care

Mar 19, 2023

The World Baseball Classic has created drama filled games, electric atmospheres, season ending injuries, and heated debates across the internet.

I’m usually ready for every sports argument, but I wasn’t ready for the heated exchanges I’ve seen online or some of the angry takes baseball fans and pundits have been spewing. Even here on Crier Media, we are not all on the same page when it comes to the WBC.

So, I decided to throw out a poll and see what people actually thought about the WBC. The results were not what I was expecting, and it’s probably the worst case scenario for baseball.

My Vote – Love It

I love the WBC and I don’t understand the people that don’t like it. I’m not a hockey fan, and I’m not the biggest basketball fan, so March is a tough month for me. Unless it’s team Canada I won’t cover soccer because it’s the last of my passions that isn’t tied to content creation. So, being able to watch competitive baseball in March is a treat. The players also love being there. If the players didn’t want to go, then maybe I’d think differently.

Baseball has bigger problems. With over 60% indifference to the WBC, it proves what I’ve been saying for years; baseball is a dying sport. If the debate of loving or hating the WBC was intense and 50% of the fans hated it, at least they cared enough to fight for or against it.

Granted, the indifference more than likely resides in Canada and the USA.

Baseball in the major markets across North America are dwindling. MLB is trying its best to improve the game, but it may be too little too late.
