Clearing Up Confusion with Dr Ubaka Ogbogu

About the Episode

Emergency podcast for (sorta) emergency powers! With confusion running rampant in Alberta politics as to what powers the Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw possesses and how she can use them, we decided to get a legal opinion from a legal expert. Dr. Ubaka Ogbogu is an Associate Professor in the Faculties of Law and Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences, and the Katz Research Fellow in Health Law and Science Policy, at the University of Alberta who teaches, among other things, Public health law and policy. We caught up to him to get an accurate picture as to what Dr Hinshaw’s powers are as well as to how she might have to navigate the use of them. We also try and put to rest (hopefully once and for all) the question of whether or not masks and limiting activities represent a legal overstep by governments, be they municipal, provincial or federal!
