Right place, right time for Baltimore Ravens tight end Mark Andrews. Not only is Andrews a safety blanket for Lamar Jackson on the field, but it looks like he can save the day for someone off of it as well in what will surely be one of the best stories of the NFL offseason.
According to X user Andrew Springs, Andrews was aboard a Southwest flight from Baltimore to Phoenix when a medical emergency struck. The tight end reportedly sprung to action to help.
“A woman on my @southwest flight from Baltimore to Phoenix this morning had a mid-flight medical emergency. The doctor and nurse attending to her couldn’t find a strong pulse, her blood pressure was extremely low, and required oxygen to breathe. It was genuinely scary,” the witness stated.
Fearing it could be her blood sugar causing the issue, Andrews reportedly stood up and offered his services to see if it may help.
“A man in the aisle seat popped up, “Could it be her blood sugar? I have a diabetic testing kit.” It was @Ravens TE Mark Andrews. Andrews instructed the medical professionals (equal citizen heroes in this story) on using his test kit. Eventually her heart-rate stabilized.”
Eventually, this first-hand witness who tweeted out what he saw, said Andrews just quietly walked off the plane as if it was no big deal and he didn’t just have a hand in saving this woman’s life.
“Paramedics met the flight as soon as we landed. Andrews deplaned quietly. No fanfare. As he has done his whole career, he stepped up in a huge moment when people needed him most. Watching complete strangers spring into action to help save someone’s life is truly amazing.”
In a statement himself, Andrews was quick to give credit to others who attended to the woman on the flight:
“In addition to the fast-acting flight attendants, the real heroes are the nurse and doctor who also happened to be on the plane. Thankfully they were able to provide the woman the quick assistance she needed.”
For Andrews to be able to stay calm in that moment, offer to help in any way, and then also have the solution to save this person’s life is truly remarkable.
Mark Andrews, the talented tight end for the Baltimore Ravens, recently demonstrated remarkable heroism and resourcefulness when he used his diabetic kit to save a woman’s life during a flight. Andrews, who himself lives with type 1 diabetes, not only showcases his athletic prowess on the field but also his quick thinking and compassion off it.
Living with diabetes requires constant vigilance and preparedness, and Andrews exemplifies this by carrying his diabetic kit wherever he goes. On this fateful flight, his preparedness proved to be a lifesaver. When a fellow passenger experienced a severe hypoglycemic episode, Andrews sprang into action, utilizing his knowledge and equipment to stabilize her condition.
Andrews’ actions underscore the importance of awareness and education about medical conditions like diabetes. By openly discussing his own experiences with the disease, he helps dispel misconceptions and stigmas surrounding it, while also inspiring others to be proactive about their health. His selflessness and willingness to assist someone in distress highlight his character both as an athlete and as a human being. In a world where professional athletes often garner attention for their on-field exploits, Andrews reminds us of the power of empathy and the impact individuals can have beyond the realm of sports.
As news of his heroic deed spreads, Andrews serves as a role model not only for aspiring athletes but for anyone facing adversity. His actions exemplify the importance of being prepared, staying informed, and extending a helping hand to those in need, regardless of the circumstances.
In the midst of his football career, Mark Andrews’ act of heroism serves as a powerful reminder that true greatness is measured not only by athletic achievements but by the positive impact one has on the lives of others.
