Shane’s Take: Oh Look, Yet Another Reason To Love Vince Carter

Shug McSween Feb 10, 2018

Not everyone is a fan of how Vince Carter left the Toronto Raptors, I wasn’t either at the time, but I got over it as the years went by, Sam Mitchell spit out more details, and Vince was given a chance to explain himself.

Lately, there’s been a ton of buzz that VC is about to be bought out by the ‘Sacremento Queens’ and signed by the Raps, so as no surprise, VC is a hot topic around these parts of the North Side.

To me, Vince Carter was, is and always will be the man.

He was the reason I rushed home for Raptors games as a teenager. Or, spent all my 250 dollar pay cheque from washing dishes at Eastside Mario’s, just so I could get a replica jersey and convince my brother to get us tickets to the next game. The guy put Basketball in Canada on the map, he deserves much more love than he receives around here. Much more love.

Here are a few numbers to chew on that may surprise you:

  1. Considering how much he got chirped for being injured all the time, the guy sits just outside the Top-10 all-time in games played. I don’t care how many years he’s played, he’s played is the point. He wasn’t injured as much as people think.
  2. He ranks 8th all-time in 3’s made. 8th! And all anyone said is he’ll only be able to dunk the ball.
  3. He ranks 23rd all-time in career points. Sure, I’ll let you play ‘the dude is 50 years old’ card for this one. But admit it, that’s a lot of points and a pretty solid rank considering all the greats.
  4. VC ranks top-3 all time for blocks by a pure guard, only behind D Wade and MJ, and people chirp his defense.
  5. He has a 95% chance of heading to the hall of fame. Yes, Vince Carter is a hall of famer! Suck on that one.

The Toronto Raptors are widely reported to become active in the buy-out market. Vince is reported as a potential buy-out candidate. I am well aware he is not the player he once was, I totally understand the ‘romantic’ side of this actually happening and how a lot of Raptors fans are blind to the fact he’s averaging like 5 points a game this year.

But, who gives a fuck.

All the Raps would need from VC is one game in the playoffs, when DeMar can’t make a fucking thing from deep, Vince comes in the game in the second half and just starts throwing up shots like it’s 2001. Maybe he scores 20 points in the second half and the Raps beat the Celtics by 4. That’s it, that’s all.

You don’t sign bought-out veterans to jump right into the rotation, never happens. Especially when your team is as deep as the Raptors. What you do sign them for, is the blast from the past moment, when your team is in desperate need of a spark and a guy like CJ Miles just may not have it in him that day.

Bring back VC to Toronto, he can help this team, and they don’t even need the help.

From the player to the person, Vince Carter is the salt of the earth. He dapped me back in 2002 and told me to get ready for a big game, I was star struck as fuck. Oh, and he dropped like 40 that night. Of course, I thought it was just because he told me to get ready.

He’s always got time for his fans and the evidence keeps piling in. Check this video out of what he set up for this superfan who travelled the world to get a glimpse of Vinsanity:
