It took him a bit but Aaron Rodgers finally has his first win as a Jet as New York was able to hold off the Tennessee Titans in Week 2 action. The veteran’s numbers don’t jump off the page but he did enough to get his new team in the win column.
In his first two games this season, Aaron Rodgers hasn’t broken the 200 passing yard mark yet. He had his fair share of struggles against the 49ers and had to dig himself out of an early hole against a middle of the pack defence. The important thing is that they were able to fight back for the win by spreading the ball around. Take rookie running back Braelon Allen for example, who recorded 2 touchdowns against the Titans making him the youngest player to record a TD in over 60 years.
The Jets finally get to play in front of their home crowd as they return to MetLife Stadium for their home opener against the division rival New England Patriots this Thursday. The Pats also find themselves 1-1 as they lost an overtime thriller to the visiting Seahawks in their home opener.
With two strong defences clashing in Foxboro for Week 3 of Thursday Night Football, it’s very difficult to lean one way or the other. Both teams are looking to build on chemistry with their young players that are steered by veteran quarterbacks. Jacoby Brissett has led the Patriots with some impressive outings but nobody is really expecting New England to be competitive, which is what makes them dangerous.
The pressure lies with Aaron Rodgers and the Jets to take care of business against their divisional foes. BET99 has New York favoured by 5.5 points which almost feels like a trap with a Patriots team that has far shown the ability to keep games close. So let’s break down what the safer plays are going into what should be a back-and-forth battle.
The Play
New York Jets Moneyline (-275)
Something about the Jets on the spread at -6 feels like a trap. New York failed to cover the season opener against San Francisco in Week 1’s disappointing loss. Week 2 was a bit hairy to start as well, which took a game winning TD from Braelon Allen, who notched his second of the day against Tennessee.
If we were playing the spread, I’d lean towards New England who has surprised a lot of fans, including Patriots fans, with their early play this season. They covered easily against Cincinnati in the season opener and lost in overtime to the Seahawks in Week 2. Seeing how this is a Jets focused play though, we’ll stick with the moneyline, but don’t get it twisted, this could easily go New England’s way.
Aaron Rodgers Under 214.5 Passing Yards (-115)
It’s strange that the line is set so high for Rodgers when he threw for 167 yards in Week 1 and 176 yards in Week 2. Let’s not forget that Aaron is coming off a torn achilles from last year and is not back to full form. Also, he’s 40.
Expect the Jets to pound the ground a lot more often with Breece Hall and Braelon Allen, but more on that below.
Breece Hall Anytime Touchdown (-150)
We wavered back and forth on whether to roll with Breece’s rushing yards or a touchdown. His rushing yards are set at 62.5 which he hasn’t quite broken yet. He notched 62 last week, which would have been a horrible beat if you had him at 62.5. Hall’s receiving ability plays a huge factor as you can expect a lot of checkdowns from Rodgers. Breece has the ability to find the endzone off the pass or the rush as he displayed in the first two games of the season. Going with the anytime touchdown is a much safer play to bring home the third leg of our Down By Two banger.
