Skiing In The Great White North: Discover Canada’s Top Ski Resorts

Feb 15, 2023

There are so many people on this platform who are more qualified to write a blog like this. Mercedes the Olympic snowboarder or Mary Anne Iveson, radio personality turned all-star podcaster, owner of Canada’s favourite outdoors podcast ‘Let’s Take This Outside. Oh, how about our international travel and food writer, Paul Feinstein? Ya, I’d bet you like to hear this from him. Well, sadly you are stuck with me.

But I am currently out west at Big White ski resort and am inspired to tell you about the best skiing in the world (super biased take).

Let’s start where I am located:

Big White
Located in the Okanagan Valley, Big White is one of the largest ski resorts in Canada, boasting over 2,765 acres of skiable terrain. Big White is renowned for its family-friendly atmosphere, and the resort offers various ski programs and lessons for kids and adults. Additionally, Big White is famous for its ‘champagne powder’ snow, which is perfect for carving and making turns. Big White has 16 lifts, including the Bullet Express, the longest six-pack express chairlift in North America. That champagne powder is real, I experienced it this morning on the Powder Chair. 12/10 world recommend.

Revelstoke
This mountain is treacherous for experienced boarders or skiers. Revelstoke Mountain Resort is located in the Selkirk Mountains in the heart of the Monashee range. The resort offers a diverse range of terrain, with over 3,121 acres of skiable terrain, 69 runs, and North America’s longest vertical descent. Revelstoke is renowned for its exceptional backcountry skiing, with access to over 500,000 acres of terrain. The resort’s lifts are mostly high-speed, with the Revelation Gondola being the main lift. Additionally, Revelstoke has an excellent terrain park, making it a popular destination for freestyle skiers and snowboarders.

Kicking Horse
This mountain is killer. Kicking Horse Mountain Resort is located in the Purcell Mountains, close to the town of Golden. The resort offers over 2,800 acres of skiable terrain, with 120 runs and a vertical drop of over 4,300 feet. Kicking Horse is renowned for its steep terrain and powder snow, making it an excellent destination for advanced skiers and snowboarders. The resort also offers excellent backcountry skiing, with access to over 8,000 acres of terrain. Kicking Horse has four lifts, including the Golden Eagle Express, a high-speed gondola that takes skiers to the top of the mountain in 12 minutes.

Saved (arguably) the best for last.

Whistler Blackcomb

Whistler is one of the most famous ski resorts in the world and it’s easy to see why. The resort offers over 8,000 acres of skiable terrain, making it the largest ski resort in North America. The resort is renowned for its world-class skiing, with terrain suitable for all levels, from beginner to expert. Whistler Blackcomb has 37 lifts, including the famous Peak 2 Peak gondola, which takes skiers across the valley between Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains. The resort is also known for its vibrant apres-ski scene, with plenty of restaurants, bars, and nightlife.

British Columbia offers some of the best ski resorts in the world, and each one has its unique features and charm. Whether you’re a beginner or an expert skier, you’re sure to find the perfect resort in BC
