I was googling the history of Pornography tonight (I swear) and shared this DM with Lindz and Lochlin.
Porn is the only thing that survived from the 1800s. It flourished, but not because of Gertrude and Mildred.
That DM started a wave of dumb shit we used to do in the swinging 1800s – before indoor plumbing, electricity, and cars. While porn has stood the test, a few other indulgences have fallen by the wayside.
Cocaine.
I’ve never done coke, but you did if you had a toothache in the 1800s. No cokehead who’s ever had a toothache would say no to a package that says “Instantaneous cure” and “Cocaine Drops – 15c”. What a fucking STEAL.
Over-the-counter heroin.
Don’t have a toothache? General anxiety or a run-of-the-mill headache? Bayer sold Heroin WITH a needle! The added value of having a glass container for your heroin when you go on a walkabout was a nice touch.

One Night Cough Syrup
“One Night Cough Syrup” looks more like a toxicology report from a dead raver than medicine.
Two hundred years ago, men were men; women were women; They didn’t ask questions; they just got on with it. Heroin? Sure. Asthma cigarettes? Why not. They amputated legs with moonshine and a stick for the amputee to bite.
Life expectancy in 1840 was 40 years old. In 2023 it’s 78. You can thank running water and the removal of heroin and cocaine candies from store shelves. But if you happen across some “One Night Cough Syrup,” lemme know. It sounds like a blast on a Saturday at 9 pm, regardless of the century.
