Toronto Argonauts Looking To Right The Ship Against Roughriders

Gabriel Hamilton Jun 20, 2025

The Argonauts are looking for answers again after a pair of lackluster performances that have left the team in an early 0-2 record early into this 2025 season. Whereas the opposite can be said about their competitors for this game. The Saskatchewan Roughriders are coming into BMO Field having a 2-0 record with a tough defense and an explosive offense.

If the Agros want to get into the win column, they must do a better job with ball protection and field management. In both losses the Argos have given up large plays on special teams. When the other team gets the ball starting at mid-field, it puts extra pressure on the defense trying to limit the damage. Obviously the same can be said when turning the ball over. The Argos are tied with the most turnovers so far this season (5) and are last in the league with takeaways (1)

The Argos are also nursing numerous injuries to key players on both sides of the ball. Chad Kelly will once again be sidelined, instead of playing while he continues his recovery from the broken leg suffered in the East Final last year. Deonta McMahon, the starting running back, will also be out of the lineup. The offensive line is missing three players (Doxtater, Griffen and Ciraco) and that is just the offense. Defensive lineman Demarcus Christmas is out as well as linebackers Jack Cassar and Wynton McManis. Every team will go through injury issues, but it also opens the doors for the next guy up.

Rookie running back Miyan Williams will make his CFL starting debut. Williams put up impressive numbers in last week’s game against the Calgary Stampeders, rushing for 62 yards on 9 carries as well as 65 yards through the air. His 5’8 frame is hard to bring down one-on-one, but he will need protection from his offensive line, as can be said with the starting quarterback, Nick Arbuckle.

Arbuckle knows what it takes to win. He is a vet and won MVP at last year’s Grey Cup. But in this league, you are only as good as your last start, and so far, this season, there has not been a lot to celebrate. Arbuckle has thrown for 582 yards so far this and has a completion rate of 68.9%. He has also thrown 2 touchdowns compared to 4 interceptions and he has a lost fumble on his record. Protection is key to the Argos if they want to get into the win column for the first time this season.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders are looking to continue their momentum with a third straight victory to start the season. They have managed to do that in large part because of their run defense, which was among the best last year and looks every bit as good this year. They are also getting contributions from their receivers as Trevor Harris has spread the ball within his receiving corps.

The Argos will need to play hard and smart football if they are to get their first win on the season and avoid an 0-3 start for the first time since 2019.
