truLOCAL Trish: Dress Your Sausage

Oct 17, 2019

October means a lot of things. It means Thanksgiving dinner (with seconds). And Hallowe’en parties. It’s Sunday football, and Oktoberfest. That means sausages are on the menu!

Sausages can be served plain on a bun. A plain sausage is a sad sausage. It’s a boring sausage. I love an exciting sausage, so I like to dress mine. What do I dress it with? There are so many options!

The first thing to consider is the flavour of the sausage itself. A milder garlic sausage will pair well with any topping, from savoury to sweet to spicy. A sausage with more of its own flavour, like a honey garlic sausage, will pair better with more complementary toppings.

What kinds of toppings are out there?

There are traditional choices, like sautéed onions, grainy mustard, fresh saurkraut, or juicy banana peppers. These pair best with mild or hot Italian pork sausages, which have lots of their own flavour, but don’t overpower.

There are sweet toppings, like corn relish, grilled bell pepper, or fruited ketchup. These options complement salt & pepper sausages, or honey garlic sausages, which also have a sweet flavour.

If you want to really get crazy with your selections, try gravy, blue cheese, pesto, or popcorn on your sausage – it’ll be an unforgettable flavour experience!

When it comes to dressing your sausage, the bun also matters! Whether you use a traditional sausage bun, a pretzel bun, a lettuce bun, or no bun, it will make a huge difference.

With all these options available, there’s no true right way to dress up your sausage. Personal preference is king.
