Uber is coming clean about its cover-up of a year-old hacking attack that stole personal information about more than 57 million of the beleaguered ride-hailing service’s customers and drivers.
So far, there’s no evidence that the data taken has been misused, according to a Tuesday blog post by Uber’s recently hired CEO, Dara Kho . srowshahi. Part of the reason nothing malicious has happened is because Uber acknowledges paying the hackers $100,000 to destroy the stolen information.
The revelation marks the latest stain on Uber’s reputation.
The San Francisco company ousted Travis Kalanick as CEO in June after an internal investigation concluded he had built a culture that allowed female workers to be sexually harassed and encouraged employees to push legal limits.
It’s also the latest major breach involving a prominent company that didn’t notify the people that could be potentially harmed for months or even years after the break-in occurred.
Yahoo didn’t make its first disclosure about hacks that hit 3 billion user accounts during 2013 and 2014 until September 2016. Credit reporting service Equifax waited several months before revealing this past September that hackers had carted off the Social Security numbers of 145 million Americans.
Uber seems to have an innate ability to shit where it eats, and this is a fucking big one.
Losing 57 million customers personal payment information is worse than a Psychiatrist paying for TV team to out all of his/her fucked up patients and their issues.
When I first downloaded the UBER app, it was a godsend. No more puke stained Toronto cabs. No more puke stained Toronto cab drivers that ask for blowjobs for a cheaper fair. UBER driven cars had mints and bottled water, smelled like cheap cologne and you didn’t have to tip.
Then came “surge pricing” and 2 hour waits for a more expensive car I didn’t order. I was charged 200 dollars for a 30 dollar fair after leaving a strip joint wasted and didn’t notice until I checked the receipt in the morning. Usually, I’d look at the receipt and know the steep price was penance for getting shitfaced the night before and call it a lesson.
I sucked it up and kept the app. I don’t use it, but I kept it.
After reading this story, I checked my account, and for some reason the country of origin was China, and I realized why UBER had become a running fucking joke. UBER doesn’t give a shit about me or safeguarding my information. UBER cares about UBER and getting your information.
I have no idea who has my information, and I also have no idea if UBER can guarantee the Hackers don’t still have my Information.
I deleted the APP. I’ll plan instead of asking for a UBER and so should you. And if you see UBER’s douchey former CEO Travis Kalanick, kick him in the dick for me.
