Carlos Valdez wanted to do something nice for Newey. He was, after all, 89 years old and delivering pizza door to door. Valdez decided to crowdfund on Newey’s behalf via a Venmo link on his TikTok page, and within 24 hours, he had raised more than $1,000. Donations ranged from a mere penny — you can donate a cent on Venmo — to $500. Thousands of people gave a dollar or less. It all added up to more than $12,000.
@vendingheads Here it is 😍 #fyp #venmochallenge #🍕man #love #blessed #gift #lovewins
Maybe we’re not all bad.
Kindness has a massive ripple effect that extends miles past the act of kindness and sometimes, we get it right.
Derlin is almost 90 and instead of looking for handouts, he’s still out there 24 years after most people retire. Instead of acting like a miserable old prick, he’s trying to make delivering pizza a happy thing instead of a real fucking downer.
Most of us would look annoyed while shortchanging the old fella with a 2 dollar tip but the Valdez family know sustainable happiness comes from living out-of-self while trying to make lives around them better.
We really can create the world we want to live in. Every act of kindness helps create that world because the law of psychological reciprocity is very real.
You don’t need to raise 12k for a 90-year-old pizza driver to affect change.
Hold a door open for someone who’s struggling.
Smiling at someone who isn’t.
Helping when you don’t have to.
Showing compassion when you don’t want to.
We were meant to help others because that’s when we as human beings are at our best and kindness helps us forget our own problems by being of service to others.
Real, selfless, kindness is rare fuel for the troubled soul.
