Video: Astros’ Jose Altuve out 8-10 Weeks, Becoming Another Victim of the WBC

Mar 19, 2023

Houston Astros star Jose Altuve has become another victim of the World Baseball Classic.

Altuve was drilled by US pitcher Daniel Bard in a Venezuela loss to the United States.

The Astros released a statement on Sunday confirming that Altuve suffered a fractured thumb and requires surgery. Though Houston has not confirmed a timeline, reports say Altuve will be out 8-10 weeks.

This of course has continued the debate about the validity of playing the WBC prior to the MLB regular season.

The truth is, somebody gets hit by a pitch every game. This just happened to happen during the WBC. Altuve could have easily picked up this injury during Spring Training or Opening Day. It’s baseball, this stuff happens.

You don’t want to see anybody get hurt in any game. However, the “meaningless game” is getting old and stupid. If Vlad Guerrero blows his ACL in April, the most meaningless month of baseball, are we going to scream that stars have to stop playing baseball in April? Do you hear how stupid the argument sounds?
