Black ice gets a bad rap. It’s not black, It’s clear which means you can’t see it which is the shitty part. The good part? Black ice renders your car about as useless as “tits on a tomahawk” (TM Jimmy Blundell).
If there’s a lesson here it’s DO NOT GET OUT OF YOUR CAR FOR ANY REASON AT ALL IF YOU WRECK. Ever.
The reason being is you’re much safer in your metal cocoon that you are outside the car. Especially where black ice is concerned.
I worked with a traffic woman 15 years ago who was new to broadcasting and thought we were being racist when we told the listeners to be careful of ‘Black Ice’. After she combed her sideburns, we slowly informed our unnamed traffic specialist we said ‘look out for ‘Black Ice’ not ‘Black Guys’ on Avenue Rd in Toronto.
She was relieved…and I fired her the next day. You just can’t have a person delivering traffic news who doesn’t know what ‘Black Ice’ is. Plus she wouldn’t shut the fuck up off-air and cried 3 mornings out of 5. Huge colleague turn-offs
