Video: Police refused to issue an emergency alert in Nova Scotia mass shooting so Nick Beaton’s wife and unborn child were murdered and Nick would like an explanation
I’m not a fan of exploiting grief for clicks or ratings or page views so asking a man whose wife and unborn child was just murdered how he ‘feels’ about the whole thing seems self-serving and really disingenuous.
However, Nick Beaton brings up a valid point; Why the FUCK didn’t the RCMP or the province issue an emergency alert detailing what was actually happening until it was all over?
“I spoke to my wife minutes before her life was taken”: Nick Beaton recalls the last conversation he had with his wife, who was a victim of the mass killing in Nova Scotia. Watch the full interview here: https://t.co/Z50gBc18jm pic.twitter.com/Xne17gTpOT

Nick’s grief is palpable and his point is a good one. Why didn’t every human being with a cell phone receive one of those obnoxiously loud emergency alerts detailing EXACTLY what was happening so Nick’s wife could decide for herself whether or not to leave the house on Saturday night?
The RCMP put out a Tweet while the Province of Nova Scotia did nothing and today, they are both blaming each other for not communicating the ongoing deadly details until it was over late Sunday afternoon.
-The victim count is 23 at the time of this post and officials still aren’t sure that number won’t grow over the coming days.
-The shooter, 51-year-old Gabriel Wortman had a history of violence and was known to police & neighbors as an asshole and ‘Police enthusiast’
-Police knew who they were looking, knew Wortman was in a mock police cruiser dressed as an RCMP officer
-Some residents in the areas circulated a picture of Wortman on their own after the shooting began on Saturday night. The RCMP released nothing other than tweets about an ongoing situation in Portapique and to ‘lookout’ for a guy with a gun.
The first tweet from Nova Scotia RCMP came out at 1030pm on Saturday.
#RCMPNS is responding to a firearms complaint in the #Portapique area. (Portapique Beach Rd, Bay Shore Rd and Five Houses Rd.) The public is asked to avoid the area and stay in their homes with doors locked at this time.

The second tweet (still no emergency alert) came out Sunday morning at 7am, 9 hours after the shootings had begun. 9.
#RCMPNS is advising people to avoid Hwy 4 near Hidden Hilltop Campground in #Glenholme. Gabriel Wortman is in the area. Please stay inside your homes and lock your doors. #Portapique

At 9 am, 2 hours after the second more ominous Tweet, Nova Scotia RCMP then decided to tell people who the shooter was complete with a full description of the car and RCMP uniform a full 11 hours after it all started. 11.
Gabriel Wortman is currently in the #CentralOnslow #Debert area in a vehicle that may resemble what appears to be an RCMP vehicle & may be wearing what appears to be an RCMP uniform. Please stay inside and avoid the area. #RCMPNS

At 1040 am RCMP tweeted they had apprehended (shot and killed) Gabriel Wortman and there would be more information at a 6 pm press conference.
Gabriel Wortman, suspect in active shooter investigation, is now in custody. More information will be released when available. Thank you for your cooperation and support. #Colchester

Nick Beaton and every other person who lost a loved one in the area have all said despite the senseless nature of the shooting, they can’t wrap their heads around why they didn’t know more.
It appears most of the killing was done during the 9-hour window between the first tweet at 1030 and the second at 7 am so either A) The RCMP didn’t respond in earnest to the original complaint wile Wortman kept shooting people
B) They lied by omission putting Canadian’s lives at risk and in the process dozens of people were killed
C) The Portapique RCMP detachment is closed from midnight to 7 am
It’s a fucking terrible story and this portion needs to be investigated. If they can send alerts to our phones when a 6-year-old is stolen by a guy in a gold Toyota Corolla, they should be able to do the same thing while some deranged denture maker with an assault rifle is randomly shooting people in rural Nova Scotia.
