VIDEO: Tim Horton’s Flew Kenya’s Only Hockey Team To Canada To Play With Sid And Nate

Love him or hate him, there’s no better ambassador for the game than Sidney Crosby, and Tim Hortons isn’t far behind.

Can you imagine loving hockey as much as these hardcore Kenyans do only to be given a chance to do what every hockey fan around the world grows up wanting to do?  For them it’s so far off their life radar, the surprise of Sid and Nate McKinnon walking into their dressing room must have been heart stopping.

More and more companies are starting to understand the way to peoples wallets is through their hearts.  Nike and Hyundai get it.  Not only does ‘latching’ on to a feel-good story help you sell  products, but it also makes people happy to buy your products because they don’t associate you with sweatshops and 18 hour work days when you partner with Cancer or racial equality.

The Hyundai Superbowl Cancer commercial was a stretch.  After seeing it, I felt like they were exploiting cancer for car sales which is a shitty thing to do.     I doubt you’ll see car commercials that support people with Lupus or MS because it’s not as sexy as Cancer and probably won’t sell as many cars.

The Nike commercial struck the right tone at the right time but ignored the millions of kids earning 1 dollar an hour making their gear, but that’s hard to put in a commercial.

Tim’s is connected with Hockey in Canada like no other brand, so it looks and feels legit for the right reasons.  It’s a feel-good commercial that makes you proud to grab a double-double on the way to the rink and the integrated content messaging is brilliant.

PS

Remember when Sid told reporters in NO WAY DID HE HAVE THE MUMPS…

It’s easily his worst moment as a pro and I for one will never let him forget it.
