WATCH: PPC candidate and Rosa Parks wannabe likens vaccine passports to Nazi Germany

A failed PPC candidate is making waves on social media and local news after being arrested in a Tim Horton’s for failing to abide by public health restrictions. A quick search of his Twitter profile reveals the Rosa Parks wannabe has a history of making extreme statements.
Darryl Mackie was the PPC candidate for Oshawa in the 2021 federal election. According to CTV, Mackie came into last place in his riding. He made the news Wednesday after being arrested in an Oshawa area Tim Hortons, likening himself to Rosa Parks and refusing to wear a mask or provide his vaccination status. His stunt lead to him being cuffed by police, and charged with trespassing. In a recent statement post to Twitter, Mackie described his arrest as an “adventure.”
Browsing through Mackie’s Twitter profile, it’s clear that Mackie has a history of making controversial, extreme statements. On September 7, 2021, Mackie posted a video showing him wearing a yellow star. The yellow star is a reference to Nazi-era Europe, when Jews were forced to wear yellow stars. According to the British Library, “the star was intended to humiliate Jews and to mark them out for segregation and discrimination. The policy also made it easier to identify Jews for deportation to camps.” While Mackie acknowledges the current situation in Canada is as not as bad as the Holocaust, he fears Canadians are “moving in that direction fast.” He states that he feels “discriminated against” and “othered.” Mackie omits the fact COVID is still a serious threat, and vaccine passports are way to increase vaccinations rates.

On September 8, 2021, Mackie posted an invite on his Twitter page to a “peaceful purple protest.” Included in the graphic is an image of a yellow star. In response to his tweet, one person typed, “If not getting invited to the grownup table leads to you comparing your hardship to that of Jews during the Holocaust, the moderators made the right decision in not inviting you to the grownup table.”

The Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum (DHHRM) slammed comparisons between modern-day Covid restrictions and the horrors of the Holocaust. The DHHRM issued a statement on its website condemning this kind of rhetoric:
This accusation is as disgraceful as it is historically insupportable and morally reprehensible. The deportation of Jews to their deaths by a totalitarian, racist, antisemitic regime stands as an unmatched horrific time in modern history. To compare this to the efforts of our elected officials to attempt to balance our health and economic needs while under threat from a worldwide pandemic cheapens the sacrifice of the millions of Jews murdered by the Nazis and their collaborators.
Many people have echoed the DHHRM’s statements, calling Mackie a “fool” and a “moron.”
