Which Teams Have The Best Chance At Winning The Grey Cup

Oct 30, 2023

The CFL regular season is now done, and the field of 9 teams is now down to six. Six teams are fighting to be called Grey Cup Champions for 2023.

This article is about me giving a ranking from 1-10 on what I think each team has a chance to win the Grey Cup and why I believe that. Now, I’m not an expert on the league, but I’ve gotten to know the teams, so I think I know a thing or two.

The first team and the one with the lowest rating is the Montreal Alouettes. Now, I know they are second in the East and the team hosting the East semi-final this Saturday, but Montreal has a colossal stat that I can’t look past; they went 11-0 versus the bulk of the league, the big three, and best three teams league in Winnipeg, BC, and Toronto, they went a whopping 0-7 against. That is why I give Montreal a 3/10 chance on my judgment scale to win the Grey Cup: the inability to beat an excellent team.

Second up is the Calgary Stampeders. They have been resilient throughout the 2023 season, but I believe Calgary is on the back 9 of the team’s run of success with winning two Grey Cups in the last ten years. I think they have a chance to shock BC this Saturday, but besides that, they won’t go far in the 2023 playoffs; the 6-12 Stamps were also lucky with Saskatchewan metaphorically peeing down their leg after their Labour Day win VS Winnipeg. The one thing Calgary. What is going for them is wins against BC and Toronto. 5/10.

Third, and this is a team that may surprise people, is the BC Lions; coming off a 12-6 season, I like the Lions. They’ve got the right players in place, but I think 2024 is the chance for them to be a genuine threat in the West and the rest of the league. 2023 was a wonky year for the Lions. They beat Winnipeg in Winnipeg, but they also let Toronto hang 45 on them early in the year. BC could prove me wrong; I don’t see it yet. 6/10 for me.

Fourth, and I got the somewhat surprising Hamilton Ti-Cat, who, if they beat Montreal, could go into BMO and beat Toronto, the team that tormented them all season also; Toronto hasn’t beaten Hamilton in an East final at home since 1983. Hamilton is the team that will either flame out or go on an unlikely run to the Grey Cup, which happens to be played in Hamilton’s Tim Hortons Field. Tabbies are essentially playing with house money. 7/10.

Fifth, I got the Blue Bombers of Winnipeg, another dominant season by Mike O’Shea’s crew led by Zach Collaros and Brady Oliveira. With a 14-4 record, IG Field will be a hard place to get the upset win against a Winnipeg team looking to redeem last year’s Grey Cup loss to Toronto. Winnipeg’s path to a potential dynasty is there, and it is up to them to make it happen; they’ve got the tools to do it, but will they? Time will tell. 8/10

Last but certainly not least. The 2022 Grey Cup Champs, the 16-2 Toronto Argonauts. They’ve had a nearly flawless season, with only one true loss to Calgary: the game in Winnipeg. Toronto used to rest starters and didn’t care about winning it. Ryan Dinwiddie has had his boys focused, with each week being 1-0, and the 16-2 record while nice is now past, and the Boatmen know that this is one game at a time and 60 minutes to the next step. They are skilled on all sides of the ball, and BMO Field will be rocking next Saturday when the East Final comes to Toronto. 9/10.
