The Surprising Origin Story of George Takei’s “OH MY!”

Joe Williamson Mar 8, 2023

The best thing about the internet (besides pornography) is that sometimes a story you missed the first time goes viral a second or third time.

Enter the origin story of George Takei and his famous “OH MY!”

If you search George Takei “Oh my” literally millions of results will populate. Clips, gifs, and memes. He might be more famous for “Oh my” than for being on Star Trek! NOW THAT’S AN UNUSUAL LEGACY!

One would think that his catchphrase came from either Star Trek or one of the other countless film, TV, or stage productions he’s been a part of, but no, it came from an appearance on Howard Stern of all places. He recently (December 2022) recounted how it came to be on The Graham Norton Show.

The anecdote has been viewed millions of times and I account for at least half of them. I LOVE this story. It’s wholesome, innocent, and gives me the warm and fuzzies.

Share it with someone who could use a smile.
