Cincinnati Reds’ GM Leaves Door Open for Joey Votto’s Hometown Return to Toronto

Mar 23, 2023

Cincinnati Reds’ general manager Nick Krall has made it clear that he wants first baseman Joey Votto to finish his career with the Reds, the only team Votto has ever played for. However, Krall recently revealed that he would consider trading Votto to his hometown Toronto Blue Jays if the Reds were out of playoff contention and Votto requested a trade.

Votto was born and raised in Toronto, which makes the possibility of playing for his hometown team appealing to him. This offseason, he even documented some of his adventures around his hometown, which made headlines in the sports world.

Although Votto had a tough 2022 season, being limited to just 91 games due to a season-ending shoulder surgery, he remains one of the most accomplished players in Reds history, ranking second on the all-time Reds list in home runs, third in RBIs, and sixth in games played.

The Blue Jays already have reigning Gold Glove winner Vladimir Guerrero Jr. at first base and recently signed first baseman Brandon Belt. Still, if Votto becomes available, the Blue Jays may see this as an opportunity to add a veteran player to their roster.

Votto is scheduled to earn $25 million in 2023, with the Reds holding a club option for $20 million in 2024. Despite his recent struggles, Votto’s impressive career statistics and loyalty to the Reds make him a valuable asset to any team.

It remains to be seen whether Votto will finish his career with the Reds or make a move to his hometown team, but fans of both teams will be eagerly waiting to see how this story unfolds.
