Panthers Fall Short Again, Oilers Stay Alive

The Edmonton Oilers staved off elimination once more, defeating the Florida Panthers 3-1 in Game 5 to force a Game 6 back in Edmonton on Friday night.

First Period

The Oilers got off to another fast start, scoring a shorthanded goal for the second straight game. Connor Brown intercepted a pass and beat Aleksander Barkov on a breakaway, deking Sergei Bobrovsky for a 1-0 Oilers lead just 5:30 into the game.

Second Period

Edmonton extended their lead early in the second. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins fired a shot from the slot that was stopped by Bobrovsky, but Zach Hyman pounced on the rebound to make it 2-0 Oilers. The Panthers finally got on the board with 7:18 left in the period. Corey Perry scored on the power play to extend the deficit to 4-1. But just 12 seconds later, Evan Rodrigues answered for Edmonton to restore the two-goal lead at 3-1.

Third Period

Despite heavy pressure from the Panthers, Stuart Skinner was outstanding in net for the Oilers, making several huge saves to preserve the 5-3 victory. The Panthers could not solve Skinner again as the Oilers held on to force Game 6 back in Edmonton on Friday. The game ended with theatrics as Matthew Tkachuk made an unbelievably amazing diving save that Connor McDavid did end up putting into the back of the net that sent Panthers GM, Bill Zito into an anger spell.

Key Stats

  • Connor McDavid had an assist, giving him 33 for the playoffs to break Wayne Gretzky’s single-postseason record.
  • Stuart Skinner made 32 saves for the Oilers.
  • The Panthers are now 3-4 in potential series-clinching games this postseason.

With the series shifting back to Edmonton, the Panthers will have another chance to claim their first Stanley Cup championship in Game 6 on Friday in front of what should be a rowdy and raucous Edmonton crowd.

Hi, my name is Griff and I'm a complete sports nut. I love to play sports, watch sports and most importantly bet on sports too. If I'm not watching or betting on sports, you can find me on the golf course, between the pipes as your average beer league goaltender. Although sports take up most of my life, I also love spending time with my two dogs, streaming usually a 90's Simpson's or attempting to read more books.
