3 Minutes That Matter: Jimmy Buffet, The Labour Day Classic

The Charles Adler Show

About the Episode

We now know what killed Jimmy Buffett, Merkel cell cancer took his life at 76.

The Skin Cancer Foundation says Merkel cell carcinoma is rare but aggressive form of skin cancer. Merkel cell is 40 times rarer than melanoma. Buffett was best known Margaritaville. But he was best known to James Taylor, Paul McCartney, Alan Jackson and other greats as a member of the club, one who could not only write but play and perform and make their fellow musicians and most important audience members feel wonderful. While he is best known for Margarativille, a song called It’s Five O’clock Somewhere was recorded by Alan Jackson with a cameo from Jimmy had a few lines that went like this.

I could pay off my tab, pour myself in a cab

An’ be back to work before two

At a moment like this, I can’t help but wonder

What would Jimmy Buffet do?

And then Jimmy sings Funny you should ask, Alan… I’d say:

Pour me somethin’ tall an’ strong Make it a Hurricane before I go insane. It’s only half-past twelve but I don’t care.

This is Labour Day 2023…..I did a lot of blue collar work for my dad many years ago. I’m not considered Blue Collar now. But I have no doubt the hard working hands of my mother and father gave me food and shelter and everything else that paved a pathway to all my dreams. Happy Labour Day to all Canadian and American working families.

The Labour Day classic in Regina is always played on the Sunday before Labour Day. The Riders beat the Winnipeg Blue Bombers yesterday but the game was marred by one very dumb and ugly play. Zach Colleros the Winnipeg QB had just thrown a ball incomplete when he wasn’t tackled by a Rider linebacker. He was head butted – I said head butted in Broad daylight. No penalty called. But the CFL has to think about doing something to hold the Rider accountable. Otherwise their just headbutting the good name of a professional football league that looks very amateur at this moment.
